The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is located within the Gozitan fortified city, Victoria. The first foundation stone of this cathedral was laid down in 1693 and it is built almost in its entirety out of local limestone, following the plans drafted by the architect Lorenzo Gafà. The ground plan forms the shape of a Latin cross and its architecture is Baroque in style. The cathedral is located within close proximity to the Old Prison.
