The area where the stairs are located is mostly known by the Victoria Gate which divides the area of Valletta situated within the bastions and the busy marina. This area of Valletta has a history dating to 1569 when the Del Monte Gate was constructed. This gate became too small to withstand the high concentration of activity, given its proximity to the landing place of boats along the Grand Harbour. Victoria Gate was built in 1884 to replace the previous gate and was named after Queen Victoria.
